How can we make sure that VCSE sector organisations are confident to ask to be paid when working with organisations like the UoS – and how can we embed in UoS culture offering to pay VCSE organisations for their time? Do we need to standardise this across the UoS? How does this work in other organisations? Are there examples of it working well, and of it not working well we can learn from & build on?

There is a challenge with interns, where we have been in the position where some of our paid team had to defer wages as we had to pay the intern and had not quite got the funds in time :-(

Prompt payment is crucial for small organisations to keep their cash flowing. More and more organisations are dipping into their reserves, and slow payment could be the straw that leads to closure of a charity or community organisation or social enterprise. I hope this point can be raised with finance teams.

Articulating an organisation's or individuals's USP is really important. Anyone can help with this by sharing a testimonial, so that people know their own worth to others.

Fully agree. As a social enterprise, mostly we are offered no payment for our professional input (though our experience is happily taken and the input we give is appreciated with kind words), sometimes a sum like £15 per hour (which after organisational and on costs comes in at below the minimum wage), sometimes the NIHR rate and sometimes a consultancy rate. It is only a consultancy rate which allow us to keep the lights on, pay the real costs of running an organisation and continue to deliver work into the future.
