Botley Parish is home to the Upper Hamble River and is used extensively for leisure activities such as kayaking, paddle-boarding and swimming. The river suffers from poor water quality due to regular discharges and users are concerned about health impacts.

Our goal is to ensure the Upper Hamble River remains a safe, clean, and enjoyable space for recreation and wildlife.

How can we identify when it is safe to enter the water in real-time?

Real-time assessment won't be trivial if the services don't exist already. We created the flood event model for Hampshire in 2015 and near real-time analysis required 22 data points and some significant compute and data analytics.
You may find that you can improve current information by performing localised 'kick sampling' and recording the findings so that when there is a relevant service that can process the data, you have some historic data to work with. Beyond that you will likely need to monitor turbidity, river flow, water level, rainfall, outflow from water co, known pollutant sites (farms).... and these are just off the top of my head. Most data analytics platforms would be ablet o use this information to infer a level of safety without having to create your own algorithms but citizen interest may mean that you get criticised for accepting the results from an AI 'black box'

Could you contact the local primary schools and involve the pupils in a project about the River Hamble?

We have people working on water quality here at the Engineering Centre at the University. I can connect you up to see if they can help.
